Arts Council England Invitation to Tender

WE PLAY, the North West’s cultural legacy project for London 2012 and the Cultural Olympiad and the Northwest Steering Group for the 2012 Games wish to commission the design and build of a single destination website, that consolidates the London 2012 offer for the England’s North West.

The website will increase public awareness of all official 2012 activity in the region, with a special emphasis on the diverse and high quality cultural offer made possible through the Cultural Olympiad. More specifically, the site will bring together audiences from a variety of backgrounds and interests to engage them in Cultural Olympiad events and other official London 2012 activity.

Northern Soho launches innovative Mentor Match scheme

Following extensive consultation with its members, Northern Soho will be launching an innovative Mentor Match scheme on Thursday 24 November 2011.

The scheme will give members the unique opportunity to work with experienced mentors working in the creative industries, who have earned their stripes in organisations varying from the largest agency group in the North of England to the smallest freelancers working on their own.

Creative England receives Regional Growth Fund investment

The Government has announced Creative England as one of the successful bidders to receive investment through the second round of its £1.4 billion Regional Growth Fund.

Creative England has secured c.£5 million RGF funding for ‘Digital Champions’, a private sector-led scheme providing development funding and market expertise to small creative and digital businesses working in cross-platform content and services.

‘Digital Champions’ will provide match funding and additional support to creative and digital SMEs in the North and North West, Birmingham and the West Midlands, and the far South West, areas identified as vulnerable to public sector job losses and with lower levels of enterprise and private sector growth.

Funding will help high potential businesses in these areas overcome market barriers and gain competitive advantage from the continued explosion in demand for cross platform content.

Film Culture Fund now open

Creative England’s Film Culture Fund is now open for applications, with a total of £490,000 delegated Lottery funds from the BFI to distribute in its first round.

The Fund is looking to support the provision and interpretation of both specialised and mainstream film in England, by investing in:

- audience development within the film exhibition sector
- film education activities which are linked to and support film exhibition infrastructure (e.g. cinemas, film festivals, film societies and other platforms)
- the acquisition, preservation and conservation of and access to regional screen heritage

Applications are invited from cinemas, film archives, film festivals, mobile cinemas, film societies and other eligible organisations working in the English regions outside of London.

Awards will range from £2,000 - £50,000 depending on the project. Funded activity can include programming, education, reaching under-served audiences and regional screen heritage.

Sheffield's Sensoria festival calls for submissions

Now in its fifth year, Sheffield’s festival of film, music and digital is calling for submissions.

Sensoria, the UK’s festival of film, music & digital, will be back for nine days of fun and festivities from 21 – 29 April 2012. The festival crosses musical genres and has celebrated everything from Americana/folk, indie and electronica through to rockabilly.

Sensoria is now looking for exciting new work in the realms of music, film and digital – this can include fiction features or short films with an innovative soundtrack or score, music related biopics, music documentary and truly exceptional music video. Films should have been completed after 2009.

A very secret CING Lecture

CING has announced that their second CING Lecture will be taking place in November.

The inspirational speaker they have chosen for this lecture has gained vast experience building up her highly successful company over 26 years, overseeing its growth from a family business into a global leader with 30 offices worldwide.

They are keeping her identity secret for the time being but will be releasing a different clue to her identity every day. Keep checking their event page for the clues, or follow #CINGsecret on twitter!

Creative England opens for business

Creative England is now open for business, announcing its first seven Board members and three key Senior Management appointments, and outlining details of new funding available for filmmakers in the English regions outside London.

Creative England appoints Chief Executive

Creative England has appointed Caroline Norbury as its first Chief Executive Officer. Caroline Norbury’s role will be to develop the new organisation when it starts operating next month, becoming the first dedicated support agency for England’s creative industries outside of London.

From October, Creative England will receive DCMS Grant in Aid monies from the BFI to support the strategic development of film in the English Regions. Creative England will also become the BFI’s delegated body for the distribution of National Lottery funds for film.

Art Fund announces schemes worth £1million

The Art Fund has announced details of schemes worth £1 million, aimed at boosting collections and curatorial expertise across UK museums.

As part of its commitment to boost funding to museums and galleries by over 50% by 2014, the Art Fund today announces that six museums and galleries (including one partnership) have secured a share of £600,000 funding from RENEW – the scheme that will enable museums and galleries to build new collections of fine, decorative or applied art.

My first time to The Children's Media Conference

Ian Wareing from Vision+Media recounts his first experience at The Children's Media Conference on 7th July 2011.

"In the two years or so that I have spent at Vision+Media, children’s content has always been high on the agenda: The Northwest already has a long and rich heritage of producing fantastic children’s programming and the region’s future is set to go from strength to strength following the BBC’s decision to relocate both BBC Children’s and BBC Learning to MediaCityUK here in Salford, demonstrating the broadcaster's commitment to children’s content production in the North. So it was perhaps inevitable that, sooner or later, I would find myself at a conference dedicated to children’s content....."

Postgraduate wins UK writing prize

Joining a long line of published authors, postgraduate student Kim Moore has won a national prize for her poetry.

Kim, a student on our MA in Creative Writing, was awarded an Eric Gregory Prize by the Society of Authors, worth £4,200.

Kim's poetry has been published in the Times Literary Supplement, and she has performed her poems alongside Carol Ann Duffy at the Royal Exchange Theatre.

Top marks for accountancy

TRAINEE accountants now have more reasons to choose Manchester Metropolitan University after we retained our Platinum provider status.

The status awarded by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) is the top grade awarded and currently held by only a handful of UK providers.

Platinum awards recognise a providers high pass rate, quality of staff and student experience.

Manchester Metropolitan University currently has 250 part-time students working towards ACCA qualifications at its Business School.

Launch of The Marketing Society Northern Awards 2011

After its highly successful debut last year, How-Do is pleased to announce the launch of The Marketing Society Northern Awards 2011, an initiative which will once again highlight the creativity and demonstrable achievement of the marketing industry in the North.

Launched in 2010, The Marketing Society Northern Awards brings together companies from across the region to showcase best practice and acknowledge the current and future successes of leading marketers. In the process, the awards dinner itself on 29 June, is again likely to see the largest single gathering of senior marketers across the North in 2011.

In 2011, the awards will feature a total of 19 categories, covering a wide range of sectors, including leisure and tourism, retail and food & drink. Awards will also be made for specific discipline categories including social media, mobile marketing and low budget campaigns. CSR and Sustainable/Green categories have also been added to this year’s awards list.

Innospace monthly business group - 17 March

Innospace presents: Using Social Media for building your business

Innospace presents: An event geared towards enterprising students who want to start their own business.

Bruce Thomas is the MD of modern-english, one of the UKs leading social media development agencies and Innospace company. Working mainly with entertainment brands across the UK, modern-english have recently been appointed as the English Cricket Boards social media agency delivering new ways for fans of cricket to engage with the sport.

Bruce will enlighten you as to the power of social media by mainly looking at Facebook and ways to build a successful user network who engage with your brand. He will also discuss application-led media and mobile applications.

Two further Innospace businesses will be sharing their experiences of starting their business during or shortly after university, the challenges they faced and the rewards (speakers to be confirmed).

Man Met 'most popular university'

MANCHESTER Metropolitan University is officially the most popular university in the UK with record UCAS applications.

Heatherwick voted Designer of the Year

MANCHESTER MET alumnus Thomas Heatherwick has been voted Designer of the Year by the influential Wallpaper magazine.

Thomas, a graduate of the university’s acclaimed three-dimensional design degree course, was praised for a series of inspiring projects last year including the new design for London buses and the UK Pavilion at the Shanghai Expo 2010.

The 40-year-old, hailed by Sir Terence Conran as 'the new Leonardo' for his ingenious fusion of art and engineering, was made an Honorary Doctor of Arts in July 2007.

Seed Cathedral

In 2010 his ‘Seed Cathedral’ at the Shanghai Expo won the prestigious international Lubetkin Prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects. The six-storey cube-like structure is pierced by 60,000 transparent acrylic rods that each contain a seed.

The Wallpaper judging panel included artist Marc Quinn, composer Michael Nyman, architect Mario Bellini and musician and designer Pharrell Williams.

Brain Wash Manchester date announced

BRAIN WASH is an independent short film festival which launched in London in November 2009. In October 2010 BRAIN WASH MANCHESTER played to a packed out room in the Northern Quarter's popular Bay Horse Pub.

Now in its second year BRAIN WASH MANCHESTER is pleased to announce a return to the venue, hosting a new showcase of fantastic short films on January 27th 2011 at 7.30pm.

Entry is FREE and the line up has been curated by Mike Scott, a young director from the North West, currently studying Contemporary Film and Video at MMU.

Brain Wash is a platform for up-and-coming UK filmmakers to showcase their work and it offers a programme of innovative, refreshing and simply interesting short films. Since launching just over a year ago, Brain Wash has held events in London, Birmingham and New York.

Young film-maker's breakthrough

A VIRAL TV ad made for nothing by MMU students has been shown at a Cannes film competition attended by John Landau, producer of Avatar and Titanic.
